On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand
1. On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand
and cast a wishful eye
To Canaan’s fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.
2. O, the transporting, rapt’rous scene,
that rises to my sight!
Sweet fields arrayed in living green,
and rivers of delight.
3. No chilling winds, nor poisonous breath
can reach that healthful shore;
Sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
are felt and feared no more.
4. When shall I reach that happy place,
and be forever blest?
When shall I see my Father’s face,
and in his bosom rest?
How Happy are They
1. How happy are they
Who their Saviour obey,
and whose treasures are laid up above!
Tongue cannot express
The sweet comfort and peace
Of a soul in its earliest love.
2. That comfort was mine
When the favor divine
I first found in the blood of the Lamb;
When my heart first believed,
O what joy I received!
What a heaven in Jesus name!
3. What a mercy is this,
What a heaven of bliss,
How unspeakably favored am I;
Gathered into the fold,
With believers enrolled,
With believers to live and to die!
4. Now my remnant of days
Would I spend to his praise,
Who hath died my poor soul to redeem;
Whether many or few,
All my years are his due,
May they all be devoted to him.
